What the 2020 feedback review actually found

Feedback has a huge reputation in classrooms and workplaces. That reputation was tested against a large body of studies covering many thousands of learners. The headline result was a medium-sized gain overall — real, useful, and short of magic. The average, though, hid the important part. Results swung widely from one study to the next. Detailed feedback about the task drove most of the benefit. Bare praise and letter grades drove almost none of it.

Feedback also worked unevenly across different goals. Thinking skills responded strongly. Physical and motor skills responded well too. Motivation and behavior barely shifted. So the payoff depends on two things: what you feed back, and which kind of outcome you are trying to change. Aim at the wrong target with the wrong content, and even a well-meant comment does little.

Why praise and letter grades do so little

Praise feels warm and a grade feels official. Neither one tells you what to fix. A grade marks where you landed. It rarely explains why, or what to change on the next try. Does guessing before you read really help?

Guessing the answers before you have learned anything sounds like a waste of time. A preregistered meta-analysis put that hunch to the test across many comparisons. The verdict split in a way you can use. Guessing gave a moderate boost to the exact material people had been quizzed on beforehand. For the rest of the lesson, the boost all but vanished.

Why the guessing boost stays so narrow

Think of a prequestion as a spotlight. It lights up the one fact you were asked about. Anything outside the beam stays in shadow. That helps enormously when you already know which points are the key ones. It can work against you when you guess about a stray detail and skim past the main idea.

Can your brain keep learning while you sleep?

Sleep does more than recharge you. Researchers can tag a piece of new learning with a sound or a scent, then quietly replay that cue while a person sleeps. A meta-analysis gathered dozens of these experiments and pooled the results. The replayed cues produced a small but dependable memory gain.

Small is not the same as pointless — a steady edge builds up across many facts and many nights. The gain lived in deep, slow-wave sleep, the heavy stretch that dominates the early hours.
